Proprietor Sarah Duley Sarah completed her teacher’s training course with Pilates guru Alan Herdman in 1996. Previously a professional ballet dancer, Sarah had practised Pilates throughout her career, both as a strengthening routine and during times of injury. On completion of the course, Sarah went on to set up her own ‘mat work’ classes as well as teaching in other London studios. The desire to teach in semi-private situations, and the lack of such a studio outside of central London, led to the opening of the Sarah Duley Pilates Studio, from her home, in September 1999.
During this time Sarah became a founder member of the Pilates Foundation, now one of the leading bodies of the Pilates world. When pregnant with her second child the necessity to move the studio out of home increased, and Pilates Plus was opened in St Margarets in October 2001. In September 2003 Sarah qualified as a GYROTONIC® teacher, followed shortly by GYROKINESIS® qualification.
In May 2012 Sarah opened Studio 117, a studio dedicated to the GYROTONIC® method where she also provides GYROTONIC® Pre-Training courses.
Tommaso studied dance at the prestigious Codarts Rotterdam Dance Academy. During his time there he started practicing the GYROTONIC® method. Experiencing first hand the improvement to his energy and vibrancy of movement, he went on to train fully in Rotterdam and Rome. His passion for teaching has blossomed into a true vocation. He returns regularly to perfect his understanding of the method. An important part of his training philosophy is to unlock the natural forces within our bodies to allow us to function at our fullest potential. His sessions aim to create muscular resilience, agility, vitality and ease of movement, tailored to individual goals and capabilities.
Canelle studied GYROTONIC® whilst training at The Martha Graham School for Contemporary Dance in NYC. She experienced first-hand the healing effects of GYROTONIC® as a result of using the method to recover from her own injuries during her dance career. She has taught a diverse range of clients, including professional dancers, musicians and those recovering from chronic injuries, personalising each session to ease pain and blockages, restore movement efficiency and structural integrity. Committed to furthering her professional development within GYROTONIC®, Canelle has received additional certifications in therapeutic applications for the pelvic girdle, shoulder girdle, pre and post hip replacement, psoas principles, dynamic trunk stabilisation and scoliosis.
Ailsa is professionally trained in classical ballet. With a hypermobility disorder she has had to work hard to strengthen and control her joints, working through injuries to her hips, ankles and spine; Pilates, GYROTONIC® and more generalised body conditioning have transformed her relationship with her body and her experience with it. Beginning teaching as an apprentice in Alan Herdman's studio Ailsa has since taught in Oxford, London, Tokyo and Berlin.
Ailsa says, "I have never seen a body without particular advantages and would encourage you to see yours as a unique asset and not as an obstacle. Perhaps you are a dancer or athlete with deep body awareness and specific goals, or perhaps you have never participated in any sort of physical discipline; I hope that regardless, you will feel able to come in to the studio and explore what movement means to you."
Fung Yi grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Dance. She furthered her study in London Contemporary Dance School and obtained a Master of Arts degree in Contemporary Dance in 2005. A devoted movement specialist, Fung Yi began her association with Pilates and GYROTONIC® training while studying at the HKAPA. She obtained her Polester Pilates Studio certification in 2007, and completed her GYROTONIC® Level 1 course in 2008. She also completed the GYROTONIC® Applications for the Pelvic Girdle, Applications for Pre-Post Natal (legacy), and Application for Dancer Level 1. Fung Yi has more than 15 years teaching Pilates and GYROTONIC® experience. She loves movement analysis and she believes that the quality movement could enable the body to move in harmony.
“One would be hard pressed to find anyone better at teaching GYROTONIC®. Sarah is always one step ahead with new techniques and equipment, but only allows you to use new equipment if she thinks you are ready. I highly recommend Pilates Plus!”
“Sarah is a highly skilled and inspirational teacher. She is disciplined and firm but full of generosity and humanity. Can’t be beaten!”
“What Sarah doesn’t know about the human body is not worth knowing. I have had one-to-one Gyrotonic sessions consistently twice a week for 8 years. Over time my damaged shoulder has got better, without the surgery I was told I would need, my posture has improved and I continue to play tennis.”
